"All Aboard DTaP 4"

The North Carolina Immunization Branch has developed a new statewide campaign called
“All Aboard DTaP 4.” This campaign aims to increase childhood immunization rates by promoting timely administration of the fourth DTaP dose.

An increasing number of pertussis cases and a decreasing childhood immunization rate are both challenges we currently face in North Carolina. Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a commonly reported vaccine-preventable disease in the state. Nearly 15% of children in our state are at risk because they still have not received their fourth DTaP by age three.

DTaP vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; children need five doses of the vaccine to have the best protection against these diseases. The fourth dose is the most frequently missed of the series.

DTaP vaccine is given as a five dose series and is recommended as follows:

Dose Number
Age
1
2 months
2
4 months
3
6 months
4
15-18 months
5
4-6 years

Because of the prevalence of pertussis, children should receive the fourth DTaP at the first available opportunity, which can be anytime between 12 and 18 months of age. The fourth DTaP dose can be given as soon as six months after the third dose. Without proper vaccination, children are susceptible to pertussis and are most likely to suffer severe illness and serious complications.
